If you ask most people why they choose their major, their answer will most likely be «because of the money" which is still a valid reason, because our world is depending more and more on money than any other thing, but is that all there is to life? Focusing on money?
One of the greatest things I learned from my parents is that if you follow money without enjoying what you are doing, your life will be nothing but miserable. They always emphasized on the fact that we should always choose something we thrive for. My dad used to sit us down and say “forget money, if you do something you love you will surely give 200% into it and money will flow your way without you even putting much thought into it”.
And that ladies and gentlemen is how I chose my major. Since I was a kid I was always fond of meeting people, exploring things, asking a lot of questions and talking in public, all these are qualities that made me 100% sure that journalism is the perfect job for me. Of course it wasn’t always what I wanted to do, when we are kids we always change our minds or at least me. I changed my thoughts about what I want to study endless times, to the point that my parents told me to stop stressing about it so much and just focus on the present, which is a good advice but I never took it into consideration because my brain is wired to worry. Finally starting university was in front of me and I had no idea what I want to do, I was torn between psychology and journalism, I sat down with myself and went through all my qualities and what I like to do, but confusing enough my qualities allow me to be good at both things, but I had to choose one, so I searched about the two majors. Psychology was awesome , so thrilling you get to talk to people , try to figure a person out , and the thing that allured me to it so much was helping people with mental health. Journalism was equally interesting to me, I loved writing, exploring, having to search for things, doing a lot of reading, it was perfect. Even after all this search I was still confused about what to do, until I watched a BBC news reporting and it clicked, that was it, I want to be a news reporter for the BBC. I specially chose broadcasting because I have tried it before, my mother is a journalist and I was fortunate enough to attend one of her classes and they had news reporting that day, her professor allowed me to participate and I was so thrilled when he said that I am a natural. All these things led to where I am today, on the verge of starting my journalism career.
My advice to anyone that is about to start university or even if you already started, follow what your heart desire but of course you need to also be rational, you can’t choose to do a job that is no longer existent because you like it. As mom always says you have to combine passion and your human needs in one .
