Venus of Hohle Fels and The Lion Man are by far the oldest confirmed statuettes in the world, dating to 35,000-40,000 years ago.
The Lion Man is the first sculpture to symbolise religious believes as the sculpture consists of a human body with a lion head. This masterpiece that is made from mammoth tusk was discovered in Stadel Cave, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and is 31 centimetres tall. The sculpture is weary from being passed around and rubbed which suggests that it was worshipped as a deity.
The Venus of Hohle Fels is an upper plateolithic Venus figurine, 2.4 inches tall, also made of mammoth tusk, it was found in a cave near Schelklingen , Germany. This sculpture is the earliest example of a figurative art, its characteristics match a later female figurines.
The figurine’s head was replaced with a carved ring sticking out between the shoulders, which suggests that it was worn as a pendant. The details with which the sculpture was made shows that it holds a high value in the eyes of the sculptor who carved it, the former made the figure's reproductive attributes overemphasized, which indicates that it may have been a symbol of fertility.
These sculptures show that Art have always been important to humans on many different aspects. It is a way for people to connect on a deeper level, and communicate through time.
For many people, especially artists’ art is the core of their existence.
